Update 8pm: The man in his 40s has died.

Emergency services attended the scene and the pilot was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Update 7.45pm: One man has been injured in a light aircraft crash in County Longford.

He was the only person on board.

Earlier: Emergency services are attending the scene of a light aircraft crash in County Longford.

The crash happened at around 5:30pm this evening - in the Abbeyshrule Airfield just off the N55 Athlone to Granard Road.

It is not yet clear how many people were on board the aircraft at the time of the crash or how many people have been injured.
