A man has died following a fire at an apartment in Dublin.

The blaze broke out at a property off Benburb Street in the city centre at around 9pm last night.

Firefighters removed the man from building as they extinguished the fire and paramedics attempted to save his life at the scene.

The man, who was aged in his 60s, was later declared dead in the Mater Hospital.

Firefighters and advanced paramedics from Phibsborough, North Strand and Dublin Fire Brigade HQ at Townsend Street all attended the fire.

Dublin Fire Brigade tweeted: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family, friends and neighbours at this difficult time.”

Gardaí say the cause of the fire is under investigation.
