A man in his 40s died in a fatal road traffic collision in Cork this morning.

The accident happened at approximately 11.15am on the N22, near Ovens, when a car collided with a lorry.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene having suffered catastrophic injuries.

Three units of the fire service from Ballincollig and Anglesea St, as well as gardaí and ambulance personnel responded to the incident.

It is understood the man was the sole occupant of the car. No other injuries were reported.

The road was closed while emergency services attended the scene, with local diversions in place, to allow forensic collision investigators to examine the area.

The man is the ninth person to die on Cork roads since the start of the year.

Gardaí at Gurranabraher Garda Station are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward to help them in their investigation.

In particular, they are looking for any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam footage, who were travelling on the N22 between 10:50am and 11:15am to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Gurranabraher Garda Station on 021 4946200, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Today marked the first day of reduced Covid-19 restrictions, with some people able to return to work under this phase.

It was expected this could result in a surge of traffic levels on Irish roads but this did not appear to be the case in most parts of the country. While there was a slight increase in vehicular traffic in parts of Dublin, including the M50 and the north city quays, traffic remained "far lighter than normal", according to AA Roadwatch.

Other cities, including Cork, saw even less of an increase in traffic levels, according to the AA, which said no major increase in car use is expected in the coming days either.

It is expected that further easing of restrictions in June and July will prompt a much greater increase in road use as more people are in a position to return to work.
