Man dies cycling alongside son at Belgium cycling event
An Irish man has died while taking part in the amateur Tour of Flanders cycling event in Belgium.
The 56-year-old Irishman was riding alongside his 29-year-old son when he collapsed during the 129km Tour of Flanders Cyclo.
They were cycling on the Oude Kwaremont, a cobbled road leading up the Kluisberg hill. It is the longest climb of the Tour, at 2.2km, and is well known to be a very difficult part of the course.
First aid teams came to his aid but despite their efforts, the man died at the scene yesterday.
Sixteen thousands enthusiasts from all over the world were taking part in the event at the time.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the man's family.
