A man has died following a shooting in a seaside town in Down, police said today.

A man has died following a shooting in a seaside town in Down, police said today.

The victim, in his late 40s, was shot in the chest during the incident at a house in Hazelbrook Avenue, Bangor, Co Down, shortly after midday.

Another man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Two men were arrested in Ormeau Avenue, Belfast, by police investigating the killing.

Police said no members of the security forces were involved.

An ambulance service spokesman confirmed: “One man has gunshot wounds to the chest. He is a man aged in his late 40s.”

Hazelbrook Avenue is a residential area of two-storey terraced houses close to the town centre and a stone’s throw from popular family walking area Castle Park.

Relatives of some of the victims later arrived at the scene.

A neighbour said: “It was very sad and distressing to watch.”
