A 22 year-old man has appeared in court in Waterford this evening charged in connection with a serious assault.

A 22 year-old man has appeared in court in Waterford this evening charged in connection with a serious assault.

A man remains in a critical condition in hospital following an attack which happened in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Stephen McDonagh of Kilcormac, Co Offaly appeared before a special sitting of Waterford District Court and was charged with assault.

The attack happened at the Williamstown halting site in Waterford city in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The court heard that Mr McDonagh made no reply after arrest, charge and caution.

He was granted bail under condition that he resides at his current address and observes a curfew between 10pm and 8am.

He has to sign on at Birr garda station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and is not to return to Waterford city with exception to attending court appearances.

Judge Gerard Furlong granted legal aid as Mr McDonagh is currently unemployed and he will appear before Waterford District Court again next Tuesday the 11th of February.
