A Louth man accused of having explosive substances and ammunition was freed on bail by the Special Criminal Court today.

A Louth man accused of having explosive substances and ammunition was freed on bail by the Special Criminal Court today.

Gerard Carroll (aged 20), of Ashling Park, Cox's Demesne, Dundalk in Co Louth was charged last week with the unlawful possession of explosive substances, namely a "modified 24-volt battery operated hand tool" on July 9 last at Junction 17 of the M1 motorway in Dundalk.

He was also charged with the unlawful possession of eight rounds of .357 magnum ammunition found in follow up searches at an address in Ashling Park, Dundalk on July 10.

Mr Carroll was one of five men arrested by armed gardaí during an operation against dissident republicans in the Louth area.

Today the court granted Carroll bail on his own bond and two independent sureties of €10,000 each.

He was also ordered to sign on daily at Dundalk garda station, to surrender his passport, not to associate with anyone charged or convicted of a subversive offence and to obey a curfew between 11pm and 7am.

The court remanded Carroll on bail until October 5 next.
