Gardaí have arrested a man and recovered a sum of money following an armed robbery in Drogheda, Co Louth today.

Gardaí have arrested a man and recovered a sum of money following an armed robbery in Drogheda, Co Louth today.

Two men armed with a handgun and a knife entered a financial institution on West St, Drogheda at about 3.45pm today.

They threatened and held up staff before taking an undisclosed sum of cash. On leaving the premises, an off-duty garda approached and managed to detain one of the raiders.

The second man fled the scene on a motorbike.

The man arrested at the scene, who is in his late 40s, is being held under Section 4 Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Drogheda garda station.

No shots were fired during the incident and all of the cash taken in the raid was recovered.

The investigation is ongoing.
