A man in his 70s has been killed in an apparent stabbing attack before the suspect barricaded himself inside a house in a standoff with gardaí.

Just before 6am on Saturday, gardaí responded to reports of an assault at an address at Whitechapel Road in Clonsilla.

The victim was found dead at the scene and had sustained multiple apparent stab wounds, according to gardaí.

Gardaí said a man in his 40s barricaded himself into another house nearby after the incident.

The “barricade incident” was resolved by about 11.40am. The man was arrested at the scene and is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Blanchardstown Garda station.

Gardaí said that all units involved in the incident worked closely under Garda commanders to contain the incident, preserve life and bring the incident to "a peaceful conclusion".

Local Fianna Fáil Cllr Tom Kitt said people living in the area are “devastated” by the stabbing.

“It is an area you’d never think something like this would happen,” he said.

“It is very well looked after and most people who live there have been there for a long time. They all know each other. The people I’ve been talking to are devastated by the incident.”

Gardaí have appealed for anyone with information to contact them at Blanchardstown (01 666 7000) or the Garda confidential line on (1800 666 111).

Investigations are continuing.
