The Luas is one of the safest transport systems in the world, according to new figures released today.

Initially, it has been predicted that up to five people each year would die in accidents involving the trams.

But so far, nobody has been seriously hurt.

Brian Brennan of Veolia Transport - the company that runs the Luas - said the good safety record "is largely down to the skill and professionalism of the Luas drivers, and their ability to be proactive in foreseeing events".
