A prominent loyalist, Eddie McClean, was the target of an attempted pipe-bomb attack in the North this morning.

The pipe bomb, with nails wrapped around it, was found by McClean’s wife at their home in North Belfast.

A security operation is continuing at the scene, with ambulances present to help elderly people who are being evacuated from their homes.

One 95-year-old woman sustained a cut to her head as she was being moved.

The Continuity IRA claimed responsibility for a previous attack on the same street but it’s possible that this attack is the work of rival loyalists.
