Preliminary post mortem results have shown the woman whose remains were found in Co Louth died of a single shot from a firearm to the head.

Over the next few days the remains will be taken to the forensic laboratory in Dublin where further tests will be carried out.

Michael McConville, the son of Jean McConville, who was kidnapped and murdered by the IRA in 1972, said that he believed the body was that of his mother.

He said: “From what I have seen today I do think it is my mother. There is a sense of relief. No one understands how much pressure we have been through over the last 30 years.”

The remains were found about a quarter of a mile from Templetown beach, near Carlingford by a man out walking with his children in a shallow grave in an area where the IRA admitted four years ago that they had buried Mrs McConville.

The 37-year-old vanished after being kidnapped in west Belfast in 1972 by a 12-strong gang for allegedly passing information to the British Army.
