Live grenade found in Galway

A live grenade was found in Co Galway overnight.

The army bomb squad was called out when the historic device was discovered during the renovation of a building in the Raheen area just outside Caherlistrane.

The team arrived on scene at around 10pm and the bomb was then safely transported to an open green area for a controlled explosion.

The grenade dated back to the early 20th century and would have been used during the War of Independence, as well as first and second World Wars.
