A court has heard that a man, charged in connection with a fatal stabbing in Co Clare, told gardaí following his arrest: "Nobody was meant to die that night".

21-year-old Robbie Walsh, of Island View, Kilrush, appeared before a vacation sitting of Ennis District Court this afternoon, charged in relation to the fatal stabbing of father-of-one Karl Haugh, in Kilkee, last Sunday.

The 25-year-died after he sustained a stab wound to his back which punctured his lung.

Walsh was remanded in custody to appear again on August 14.

Earlier: A 21-year-old man is due before Ennis District Court this morning, charged in connection with a fatal stabbing in Co Clare.

25-year-old Karl Haugh died after an altercation in Kilkee, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Two other men arrested in connection with the investigation have been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
