Latest: Gardaí examining burnt out car after father-of-two shot dead in Dublin

Update - 11.41am: The 28-year-old man shot dead in CityWest in Dublin last night has been named as John Gibson.

Gibson, who was a fitness instructor, was shot as he sat in a car at the CityWest Shopping Centre, but he was shot in the head as he tried to escape.

His body was eventually removed from the scene by ambulance shortly after 11.30am this morning.

Garda Superintendent Peter Duff said the father-of-two was parking his silver Audi at the shopping centre when another car parked in the same car park.

He said Mr Gibson suffered a number of fatal gunshot wounds and they are looking for anyone who was in the area from 8pm last night to contact them at Tallaght Garda Station at 01-6666000 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666111.

Mr Duff said he was uncertain at this stage how many gunmen were involved.

He added that it was clear Mr Gibson was targeted and may have been lured to his death.

It is thought the attacker may have escaped in a Volkswagen Caddy van which was found burnt out in a nearby estate.

A magazine for a gun was found on the passenger seat.

It is understood that as part of the investigation gardai are probing links to the murder of Darragh Nugent in Clondalkin, west Dublin, last week.

Mr Nugent was known to gardai and his death is believed to have been gang-related.

Earlier: An investigation is underway after a man in his twenties was shot dead in South Dublin last night.

The man was treated at the scene after suffering multiple gunshot wounds but was pronounced dead a short time later.

The 28-year-old man from the Lucan area was shot several times as he sat in his car outside the busy CityWest shopping centre.

Gardaí are now investigating the incident which happened at Fortunestown Lane, Tallaght at around 9.20pm.

It is not thought to be related to the ongoing Kinahan/ Hutch feud, but Gardaí are looking to see if this incident is connected to the shooting of Darragh Nugent, who was killed in Clondalkin last week.

They are appealing for anyone who was in the area between 9pm and 9.30pm to contact them at Tallaght Garda Station.
