Latest: Construction work knocks out power to 4,500 homes and businesses in Dublin city centre

Update - 1.35pm: Around 4,500 homes and businesses in Dublin city centre are without power after an electricity outage.

The problem, which started at around 11:30am, is affecting premises from Wood Quay to Merrion Square and some parts of the north city centre.

It is also impacting on traffic lights around Christchurch and Stephens Green.

ESB crews are working to fix the problem with power expected to be restored by around 3pm.

The outage is being blamed on construction firms hitting underground cables.

12.58pm: Dublin city centre affected by power outage

Large areas of Dublin city centre are without power due to a fault, according to ESB Networks.

The problem has affected areas in Dublin 1 and Dublin 2.

The company has said that repairs are being carried out to restore power to the 2,500+ customers affected.

Meanwhile, AA Roadwatch says the power failure is affecting traffic lights in a number of locations in Dublin city centre.

It is impacting the Christchurch and Stephen's Green areas and motorists are advised to drive with care.
