Following the resignation of Eamon Gilmore as leader of the Labour Party, it has been announced that nominations for the leadership will open tomorrow, May 27, and close June 3rd.
If more than one candidate goes forward, an election will be held on July 4.
Mr Gilmore will stay on as party leader until his successor is appointed.
Deputy leader Joan Burton, who has previously expressed interest in the party leadership, made only the briefest of comments as she left the Department of Foreign Affairs after the announcement.
"I just want to first of all thank Eamon for all his service to the party, and then we'll be meeting the parliamentary party on Wednesday," she said.
Bookmaker Paddy Power places Burton as the favourite to succeed Gilmore, at 4/9, with Brendan Howlin (15/8), Alex White (6/1) and Alan Kelly (10/1) also featuring.
