Kinsale schoolboy dies after freak accident

A 14-year-old school boy has died in hospital this evening from injuries sustained during a freak accident last Saturday.

Leon Connon collapsed while out with friends, after becoming trapped in railings near his home in Kinsale in Co Cork.

nitial reports suggested that Leon complained of feeling unwell and went to rest near the 4ft-high railings at The Orchards estate in the town, before collapsing or fainting, trapping his head in the upper railings.

However, it was also suggested that Leon may have attempted to scale the fence on Saturday, lost his footing, and fell on to the upper railings, striking his windpipe.

Members of Cork County Fire Brigade worked to resuscitate him at the scene before he was rushed to Cork University Hospital.

Gardaí said they are treating the death as a tragic accident and will now prepare a file for an inquest at the Coroner's Court.

His devastated parents, Dearbhail and Frank were being comforted by relatives last night.

Residents have now called on the town council to examine the area with a view to making it safer.

Funeral arrangements are not yet known.
