Killeen to seek ban on political interference in releases

Junior Minister Tony Killeen is reportedly set to ask his government colleagues to consider banning politicians from getting involved in the release of prisoners.

Junior Minister Tony Killeen is reportedly set to ask his government colleagues to consider banning politicians from getting involved in the release of prisoners.

Mr Killeen has been at the centre of a storm of controversy in recent weeks after it emerged that he sought the early release of a convicted child rapist and a convicted murderer from his constituency.

Yesterday, the minister met with the mother of the Robert Lynch, who was stabbed to dead in Ennis in 1991.

Nora Lynch said afterwards that she accepted Mr Killeen's apology for making representations seeking the release of her son's killer.

She also said she hoped the incident would prompt change in the way political representations are made on behalf of convicted criminals.

Reports this morning say Mr Killeen plans to raise the matter with ministers and TDs in an attempt to see what changes can be made.
