Kenny suggests he plans to oversee at least another budget

Taoiseach Enda Kenny suggested he plans to stay in place as leader until at least October 2018 to oversee at least another budget, writes Elaine Loughlin.

Mr Kenny said Budget 2017 was based on a "continued prudent management of the economy" and said the government had used the resources available to "improve people's lives".

He also hinted that he intends to still be in place to lead the Government into next year's budget.

Mr Kenny told RTE news that "we have got a very packed agenda up ahead" and his focus would be on seeing through the Finance Bill, the Social Protection Bill as well as ensuring Ireland is protected against Brexit.

Asked about Fianna Fáil's role in shaping the budget he said that all views had been taken on board "provided they were in the financial limits in accordance with the Programme for Government"

Mr Kenny also admitted that he would have liked to have done more for people in the budget but said: "While you cant do everything, you are limited by the resources that you have".

He added that he would have loved to have done more for stay-at-home mothers but they had included a "modest allocation" to this group.
