Kenny rejects govt criticism of FG's tribunal stance

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has rejected criticism from the Minister for Enterprise Micheál Martin over the party's stance on the Taoiseach's dealings with the Mahon Tribunal.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has rejected criticism from the Minister for Enterprise Micheál Martin over the party's stance on the Taoiseach's dealings with the Mahon Tribunal.

Mr Martin accused Fine Gael at the weekend of acting in a partisan manner in the on-going controversy over Bertie Ahern's financial and tax affairs.

The comment followed the party's confirmation that it was asking the Standards in Public Office Commission to investigate Mr Ahern's tax compliance after the 2002 elections.

Fine Gael has also tabled a Dáil motion expressing confidence in the Mahon Tribunal following a spate of attacks on the inquiry by the Taoiseach's cabinet colleagues.

Mr Kenny says his party is taking the action to defend the tribunal and its independence.
