Kenny condemns 'cold-blooded violence' of detective's murder in Louth

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has described the fatal shooting of a Garda detective in Co Louth as "cold-blooded violence", while Justice Minister Alan Shatter called it a "callous and barbaric event" .

Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe, who was 41 and married with two young children, was on escort duty with det garda Joe Ryan at the credit union in Bellurgan, Jenkinstown, Co Louth when he was killed.

Several shots were fired during the attack at the Lordship Credit Union on the Cooley Road in the town at around 9.30pm.

It is understood that detective Donohoe had not drawn his weapon when he was fired upon.

Mr Kenny said the incident had "left a family without a husband and father and the Garda Síochána without a brave and valued member".

Detective Donohoe was originally from Kilnaleck in Co Cavan, but was stationed at Dundalk garda station. His wife Caroline is also a garda stationed in Dundalk.

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter pledged his full support to the Gardaí in their investigation into the murder.

"My heart goes out to his wife Caroline and their two children, and to his extended family, and also to all members of An Garda Síochána," he said.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to contact them at Dundalk Garda Station on 042-938840 or 1800-666111.
