Kenny calls for phone votes money to be repaid

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has joined the growing chorus of people calling on the Healy-Raes to repay money used on premium rate phone calls.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has joined the growing chorus of people calling on the Healy-Raes to repay money used on premium rate phone calls.

Around €2,500 was spent on the calls to vote for then Kerry councillor Michael Healy Rae on the RTÉ 'Celebrities Go Wild' show in 2007.

While the calls were made from Leinster House, they were never traced to an individual phone, though the Oireachtas wrote to then Deputy Jackie Healy Rae, father of Michael Healy-Rae, about the issue.

This morning Mr Kenny said the money has to be repaid immediately.

"It might be funny if it weren't as serious as it is," the Taoiseach said.

"Celebrities do go wild - and this money should be paid back, full stop. It should never have happened."
