Jury retire to consider Aoife Phelan verdict

The jury in the trial of a man accused of murdering Laois nanny Aoife Phelan has retired to consider a verdict.

25-year-old Robert Corbet of Sheffield Cross, Portlaoise admits strangling Aoife during a row in late 2012 but denies her murder.

His trial heard they met a few months beforehand and she soon told him she was pregnant with his child but an autopsy revealed this was not the case.

From the stand the accused said he lost control and could not stop gripping her around the neck before dumping her body in a barrel.
