A jury has failed to reach a verdict in the trial of a man accused of raping a woman as she lay beside her boyfriend in a Tipperary hotel room

The jury of six men and six women deliberated for three and a half hours before telling Mr Justice Paul Carney that they would not be able to agree on a verdict.

The 26-year-old accused had pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to raping the woman (aged 34) at the hotel after a wedding function on July 7, 2008. It was day six of the trial.

Mr Justice Carney thanked the jury and excused them from further service in the future, noting that “these cases are distressing for everyone”.

He remanded the man on continuing bail until next week when the case will be listed for mention.
