Junior Minister appalled by revelations in RTÉ Investigates

The Minister of State with Responsibility for Disabilities says he was appalled at what he saw on an RTÉ Investigates programme last night.

The programme revealed that a previously reported case, in which a young woman with intellectual disabilities was left in a care setting in Waterford, was not an isolated incident.

Last night's programme highlighted another case of a vulnerable young woman who was returned to her family home, despite the HSE's knowledge that she had been sexually abused as a child by a relative.

Minister Finian McGrath said that he will receive a report into the cases concerned by the end of this month.

Sinn Féin's Disability Rights spokesperson, Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin says he was deeply disturbed by what was reported.

"I know as a sibling of someone with an intellectual disability as many, many others in families right across this country, I am very, very annoyed by what I have witnessed," he said.

"We can no longer tolerate failures, we can no longer tolerate a system that simply ignores the needs of the individual, their rights and entitlements."
