Judge refuses to throw out case of jailed 79-year-old peace activist

Jailed peace activist Margaretta D'Arcy has been remanded in custody at a court hearing in Co Clare this afternoon.

The 79-year-old was jailed last week for illegally accessing a runway at Shannon Airport during a protest against the US Military.

She appeared in Ennis District Court today over her refusal to sign a bond pledging to keep away from the Airport which led to the activation of her three-month suspended sentence.

Reporter Shona Murray says Ms D'Arcy asked the judge to throw the case out.

Ms Murray said: "She said that she would like the case to be thrown out, she said it would save an awful lot of time, he could just throw the case out.

"She also said that the country's broke, the country couldn't afford such a hearing.

"The judge said that in the circumstances that couldn't be possible, and this is a preliminary matter, and he wasn't in a position to throw the case out."
