Judge calls for demolition of Tallaght bridge after Dale Creighton death

A judge has called on the local council to demolish a footbridge in Tallaght in Dublin following an assault there that led to the tragic death of 20-year-old Dale Creighton.

Judge Anthony Halpin’s comments were made as two more men were brought before the courts charged with violent disorder in connection with the attack.

Dale Creighton was seriously assaulted at the footbridge on St Dominic’s Road in Tallaght at around 4am on New Year’s Day.

He was hospitalised with head injuries and died the following day.

This morning, 24-year-old Gerard Stevens and 20-year-old Jason Beresford, both from the Tallaght area, became the seventh and eigth persons to be charged in connection with the incident.

Both have remanded on bail until January 16 despite garda concerns. They say the assault at the footbridge was caught on CCTV and that there were an extensive number of witnesses.

At the end of the hearing Judge Anthony Halpin called the footbridge an "unholy" health risk because any person who finds himself in difficulties is caged in without any prospect of escape.

He has asked the local council to close the bridge and demolish it.
