Joan Burton confirms referendum on the 8th amendment if Labour returns to power

The Tánaiste Joan Burton has confirmed there will be a referendum on repealing the 8th amendment if Labour is re-elected.

The party launched its election manifesto earlier, promising a living wage of €11.30 an hour and a job for everyone who wants one.

Joan Burton said that a referendum on the 8th is a key part of Labour's manifesto, and would be delivered on if Labour were returned to power.

She added Labour was the only party who will offer a referendum on abortion.

"When we say we want to give the people a chance to repeal the 8th amendment, we mean it," she said.

"There will be a referendum on the 8th amendment if Labour is in government. Equally, there won’t be a referendum if we are not there.
