Ireland continues to have the fastest growing population in the EU, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The CSO says continuing high levels of immigration levels pushed up the population by 2.5% between April 2006 and April 2007.

This is the third year in a row that the annual population increased by more than 2%.

The population now stands at an estimated 4.3 million people.

Elsewhere, the CSO says only half of the non-Irish nationals assigned PPS numbers in 2004 had insurable employment in Ireland at any time during the last year.
