The Irish Refugee Council (IRC) is to receive a government grant of €110,000 to fund its work in 2006, it emerged today.

Minister for Justice Michael McDowell announced the provision, which marked the sixth consecutive year in which the IRC has received funding from the Exchequer.

The IRC was established in 1992 as a non-governmental organisation and brings together organisations and individuals throughout the state which work with asylum seekers and refugees.

Mr McDowell said the IRC’s efforts complemented the work of the statutory agencies in the field.

“I am pleased to provide funding to the Irish Refugee Council in 2006 which I hope will assist the council in undertaking its work on behalf of asylum seekers and refugees,” he added.
