Invitation to Bertie Ahern made for 'electoral reasons'

The decision to invite Bertie Ahern to rejoin FF was made for purely electoral reasons according to the Chairman of Dublin Central.

The constituency last night unanimously passed a motion calling on the former Taoiseach to rejoin the party.

The move has been criticised after the Mahon Tribunal rejected Mr Ahern's explanation of how almost €210,000 traveled through his bank accounts.

Constituency chairman Brian Mohan says everyone who voted is aware that Bertie comes with baggage.

However he says their primary concern is winning a seat in Dublin Central:"You know we are kind of looking at this politically and electorally and that is what we are trying to tap into, everything else is for himself to talk about.

"As I said, I know himself has issues with the findings of the tribunal and that is for himself to deal with, we are just looking at how we can best further the Fianna Fáil party within the constituency of Dublin Central."

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil says Bertie Ahern has not made an application to rejoin the party.

It's after his local branch - Dublin Central - passed a unanimous motion last night calling for a letter to be written to the former Taoiseach inviting him back into the fold.

A spokesperson for Fianna Fáil says if and when - Mr Ahern makes an application to rejoin - the request will be put through the same process as any other citizen.
