Investigation underway into 'unfortunate hoax' off Cork coast

An investigation is underway after a distress call off the coast of Cork was deemed a hoax.

A major search operation was launched yesterday morning after a crew member from a vessel called the blue bird called the Valentia Coastguard to say they were in danger of sinking near Cork Harbour.

Two helicopters, three coastguard units, three lifeboats and the navy were all called in to take part in the search.

After hours of searching the Coastguard confirmed that the call was "an unfortunate hoax" and an investigation was underway.
