Investigation launched into brothers found dead in Castlebar

Gardai have launched an investigation after two elderly brothers were found beaten to death in Co Mayo.

Two men in their late 60s were found dead at a house on New Antrim Street in Castlebar at around 7am this morning.

Gardaí are awaiting the results of post mortem examinations before deciding which direction the investigation will take.

Initial tests indicate both men died a violent death under suspicious circumstances.

The scene has been sealed off for a full forensic examination and post mortems will be carried out later today.

The men's names have not been released until their families have been informed.

"We don't know the circumstances yet, but the town is in total shock … it's terrible news to wake up to," said Town Councillor Ger Deere.

"They were very inoffensive gentlemen, well-known to everyone, highly respected people."
