A single Garda control centre would be better equipped to track crimes across the country, the Garda Inspectorate has said.
Robert Olson said that they are recommending the establishment of such a system whereby criminals can be tracked as they are pursued.
His comments come after an inquest into the death of woman who was killed during a chase involving gardaí.
Mr Olson said that a single control centre would better equip gardaí to deal with issues like high-speed chases and roving criminal gangs.
"There must be a single control room for the country," he said.
"You might have a couple of centres, but that's all.
"The new CAD system, which we're recommending, that we have recommended, they will then be able to track all of these pursuits, regardless of where they are, what division they're in - it doesn't matter.
"As soon as it starts, somebody is up there watching.
"If they've got the ABLS on it, they know exactly where the cars are going, they know where other cars can be to intersect the runner."
In a statement, An Garda Síochána said it sets out guidelines for Gardaí in relation to the pursuit of vehicles.
It said Garda management are currently developing a revised Pursuit Management Policy, which is aimed at giving greater assistance, guidance and training to Garda members involved in vehicle pursuit.
