In like Flynn: Detector dog helps Revenue seize €280k thought to be proceeds of crime
Revenue officers are trying to trace the movement of a freight trailer after €280,000 in cash was found hidden inside it at Rosslare Port.
The massive consignment of cash was split into more than 15 ziplock bags and placed in a cut-out compartment in the floor and covered with a large metal sheet.
Suspicious items were identified by Revenue's mobile X-ray scanner as part of routine profiling of the unaccompanied trailer.
A search of the trailer, using cash detector dog Flynn, uncovered the bags.
A statement issued by Revenue said that on Thursday evening, at a special sitting of Gorey District Court, Revenue officers were granted a three-month cash detention order by Judge Gerard Furlong.
“This followed the seizure on Wednesday of over €280,000 in cash when Revenue officers, as a result of routine profiling, searched an unaccompanied freight trailer at Rosslare Europort,” it said.
“The search, with the assistance of Revenue’s mobile x-ray scanner and detector dog Flynn, led to the discovery of cash in the floor of the freight trailer.
“The cash is suspected to be the proceeds of, or intended for use in, criminal activity and is detained by Revenue in accordance with proceeds of crime legislation.”
It said that investigations were ongoing.
Officers will try and trace where the trailer came from, whether it had just come into the port or if it was due to go out, and track its movements before then.
Just over a week ago, Garda anti-gang units, operating on intelligence, seized around €400,000 in cash after they swooped on two parked cars outside Rosslare.
Officers suspect the cash was about to be taken out of the country and was payment for drug consignments supplied by an Eastern European gang.
Officers from the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, supported by the Special Crime Task Force, arrested a Polish national and an Irish truck driver.
Last month, Revenue seized €7,000 in cash after officers searched a car, again with the assistance of Flynn, that was disembarking a ferry from Cherbourg.
A man, originally from Latvia, but living in Ireland, was questioned.
