Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin said that he would embrace any ideas the Archbishop of Dublin has on how to tackle homelessness.
His comments come after Diarmuid Martin this morning called for a public summit of all those involved in helping those sleeping rough.
The issue was highlighted after a homeless man was found dead on Molesworth Street next to Leinster House yesterday.
Minister Howlin said measures are being put in place to tackle the housing crisis, but he has acknowledged that more need to be done.
"We need to have short-term solutions," he said.
"That's why we're bringing back 655 void apartments and houses as a matter of urgency back into the system.
"They're coming back, week by week now, over the next few months, and we need to see what else we need to do.
"And I would certainly embrace any ideas coming from the Archbishop of Dublin or anybody else to ensure that we don't have a repeat of that [Molesworth St] tragedy again."
Dublin’s Lord Mayor Christy Burke welcomed Archbishop Martin's call for a summit to address emergency accommodation in Dublin, and offered to host the summit in the next 72 hours.
“Homelessness is a greater problem now than it has been in many years,” he said.
“What we can do now is work together to ensure we are using the resources we have more effectively.
“This won’t solve homelessness but it can help us house more people in the short term and prevent tragedies. I am calling on all leaders in the sector to come together to discuss this without delay.”
