Environment Minister Phil Hogan has said the Government was as shocked as the public by the revelations over phonecall recordings at Garda stations, and did not know about them before this week.

It is reported this morning that documentation and equipment relating to the system is being reviewed by the Gardaí internally in light of this week's revelations.

Environment Minister Phil Hogan's reiterated the cabinet did not know about the recordings until they were made aware of the issue earlier in the week.

Speaking to Ocean FM he said: " We were as shocked as every member of the public to find that people's convictions might be unsafe."
