Hogan examining flood defence possibilities in Passage East

Local authorities remain on high alert for flood and weather related damage, with further storms forecast.

Met Éireann has an orange alert in place until eight o'clock tonight, for Munster and counties Wexford and Galway.

But Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan, who has visited Wexford and Waterford today to review destruction by the storm damage, said his department is looking at structural work to prevent further damage.

He told Beat FM humanitarian assistance is being provided to people who have lost all their belongings.

"They've had all of their household effectively washed away and rendered useless, so the Department of Social Protection is looking after the exceptional payments," he said.

"What we're looking at here today as well is some of the structural and physical infrastructure that's required to be put in place to try and make sure that the type of situation we had in Passage East won't happen again."
