The High Court will rule this Friday on John Gilligan's challenge to a charge of possessing a mobile phone in Portlaoise Prison two years ago.

His lawyers claim internal disciplinary proceedings by the governor resulted in a loss of privileges, in the nature of a criminal trial.

They say the 58-year-old should not now be prosecuted and potentially penalised by the District Court as this would amount to double jeopardy.
