Higgins: Protests the 'only way to stop' austerity

More than 10,000 people have marched through Dublin City Centre, warning the Government not to impose further cutbacks or increase taxes in December's Budget.

The demonstration was organised by the Dublin Council of Trade Unions and other groups campaigning against the household and water taxes.

Trade union leaders called for a general strike, and urged protesters to rally again outside Leinster House on Budget Day.

Socialist TD Joe Higgins said today's march is the start of a sustained campaign against more austerity.

Mr Higgins said: "This is a magnificent demonstration against austerity and against the Household Tax.

"I think it is only the beginning because the budget is only going to intensify austerity.

"The property tax is going to be a nightmare for ordinary householders so the boycott and the intensification of a massive campaign against it is the only way to stop it."
