Health committee chair optimistic on Mount Carmel sale

Reports that Mount Carmel Hospital in Dublin may be bought by RAS Medical were welcomed by members of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health.

Committee Chairman, TD Jerry Buttimer, said that a meeting being held today regarding the hospital, which specialised in maternity services and non-emergency elective surgery, should bring some clarity to the matter.

Mount Carmel Hospital closed its doors on Friday January 31 with a loss of 300 jobs and debts of around €39m.

Buttimer said he knows there will be no state involvement in the former hospital, but is hopeful that the facility can be salvaged.

"It would be welcome if there was to be potential salvaging and a potential investor to come in and buy the hospital," he said

"Obviously there needs to be a full business case made regarding that … but the state has no involvement in that it's a private entity."
