Gusts of 110km/h to accompany wintry showers tonight

More wintry showers are on the way this evening.

A Status Orange wind alert has now been issued by Met Eireann for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo and Clare, warning of westerly winds gusting up to 110 kilometres per hour at times.

The winds will reach storm force for a time on all Irish coastal waters and on the Irish Sea.

Motorists are advised to take care on the roads this evening as driving conditions are treacherous in many places.

Gerry Murphy, Meteorologist with Met Eireann, said the bitterly cold weather will continue for the next few days.

He said: "Overall for the coming days it is going to continue very cold. Now we will see a band of rain and sleet moving down over us tonight, but that should remove some of the snow from some places.

"But then tomnorrow is another quite cold day as well, cold and bright with showers - mostly of rain and hail and sleet
