Greens to elect party leader
The Green Party has announced their intention to alter their party rules to allow the election of a party leader.
At a special meeting of the party’s members, the motion to amend the party’s constitution to create the position of party leader was passed by a large majority.
Party TD, John Gormley, supported the motion but refused to put himself forward for the position.
Instead, Mr Gormley is supporting his colleague and fellow TD, Trevor Sargent for the post.
It is likely that the new leader will be elected before the June recess of the Dáil.
Mr Gormley believes that the move will help to give the party a new image amongst voters as being a dynamic and fresh alternative to the established parties.
