Graphic images on cigarette packets 'will not make any difference'

A group representing the rights of smokers said today that putting graphic images on cigarette packets will not put people off smoking.

Health Chiefs have chosen 14 images that will appear on all boxes from today.

The idea behind the move is to emphasise the health effects of smoking.

John Mallon of Forest Éireann said that the images are a waste of time.

"You'd have to expect that the purpose of them is some sort of revulsion therapy to scare smokers away from away from buying cigarettes," he said.

"It's the equivalent of, say, a bottle of wine - you don't buy the wine for the bottle, you buy it for what's inside it. It's similar with a packet of cigarettes.

"I don't believe it will make any difference at all."
