GP group warns of dangers of 'neknominations' to young children

The Irish Council of General Practitioners has described 'neknominations' as an incredibly worrying development.

The game has been spreading across Ireland through social media, and has been widely condemned in the aftermath of the death of a young man in County Carlow, after his dare went wrong.

19-year-old Jonny Byrne from Leighlinbridge in Carlow lost his life on Saturday when his 'nomination' went wrong.

He got into difficulty jumping into the River Barrow, near Milford bridge, after drinking a pint of alcohol.

The social media drinking game, which originated in Australia, has become popular amongst Irish college students.

The ICGP is now warning of the risk to children who mimic what older people are doing.

Dr Darach O'Ciardha says alcohol doesn't have to be involved for online dares to be dangerous.
