Govt to make funds available for school supplies

The Government is making more than €50m available in grants to help parents with back-to-school costs.

The Government is making more than €50m available in grants to help parents with back-to-school costs.

Primary and secondary schools are getting a total of almost €14m to provide text books for pupils from low income families.

The Department of Social Welfare is allocating more than €36m to help pay for uniforms and school shoes.

Parents seeking the grant will have to approach the principal of the school and the local social welfare officer.

Minister for Education Mary Hanafin says both schemes will be completely confidential.
