Govt may withhold €60m GAA grant

The Government is reportedly planning to withhold a €60m grant to the GAA following the collapse of plans to build a new national stadium.

The cash was dependent on the GAA backing plans for the Stadium Ireland project.

A similar €10m pledge to the FAI is also in doubt following the Government’s decision not to provide any taxpayers’ money in funding for the stadium.

The effective scrapping of the stadium plans has also cast doubt on Ireland and Scotland’s Euro 2008 bid, but officials have expressed confidence that the bid can still be successful.

However, this would mean that the GAA’s Congress would have to lift the ban on foreign sports being played at Croke Park, something it is unlikely to do if the €60m grant is withheld.
