Government considering shared maternity leave between parents

The Government is considering new legislation which would allow couples to share maternity leave.

According to a report in today's Sunday Times, the coalition is proposing that mothers would be able to "gift" two weeks of their maternity leave to the child's father.

Another option being considered is allowing parents to step in and out of the 26 weeks' leave, to allow them to share the time more equally.

The Department of Social Protection said this scheme would be very difficult to manage in terms of payments.
