Gov needs to examine PAC's powers, chair claims

The Government should examine the powers of the Public Accounts Committee in the wake of the Rehab controversy, its chair has said.

Deputy John McGuinness made the call after his members were told overnight that they cannot compel two former Rehab bosses to appear in front of them, because the Rehab organisation is not under direct state supervision.

McGuinness, however, said the committee should have the right to look at how taxpayers money is spent

"It's now a challenge for the Government to examine the powers of the Public Accounts Committee, and then for them to determine that yes, we do want greater accountability, we do want transparency, and we want to people to be answerable, in a public way, for the money that they've spent," he said.

PAC members are due to hold a private meeting shortly to discuss the decision.
